I gaped, wide-eyed, at the huge puddle of blue paint splattered over the gym floor. The paint glistened brightly and splashed up like a blue wave onto the wall. Against the wall, blue paint cans lay on their sides.

I raised my eyes to the mural. It was a blur of blue paint at first. And then it slowly came into focus. An enormous head was painted over everything. The head was six feet tall, covering the whole mural.

Slappy’s grinning head.

“Our dreams … ,” Willow murmured, her hands still on the sides of her face, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Our nightmares … come true!”

I shook my head. “Dreams don’t come true,” I choked out. “Somebody did this. Somebody sneaked into the gym and painted that face and splashed paint all over the floor.”

“No,” Willow said. “Who would do something so horrible? No one. We dreamed it, and it came true, Richard.”

“Maybe we’re dreaming right now,” I said. I stared at the grinning dummy face on the mural. “Maybe this is another nightmare, Willow. We’re going to wake up from this, and it will have never happened.”

She stared at me and didn’t reply.

“Let’s try real hard to wake up,” I said. I shut my eyes. “Wake up, Richard,” I said out loud. “You are dreaming. Wake up. Wake up—now.”

I opened my eyes. Nothing had changed.

Willow sighed. “We’re doomed,” she muttered. “We’ll be blamed. No one will believe we didn’t do this. We’re going to be suspended for this. Maybe we’ll be kicked out of school for good.”

I swallowed. My mouth suddenly felt as dry as cotton. The sharp smell of the paint was making me dizzy. “Can we clean it up?” I said. “We can at least try to clean the floor, can’t we?”

Willow shrugged. “I guess. But it won’t be easy.”

“Let’s check out the custodians’ supply closet in the basement,” I said. “We can get mops and buckets and—”

I stopped with a gasp when I heard the gym doors bang open. Willow cried out and her eyes went wide.

We both spun around to see someone enter the gym and come striding toward us.
